Meeting Faith (and the little door that started it all)

There’s something quietly special about seeing a character for the very first time.
As I write a story, there are often images of the characters in my head, which helps my words come alive, but it isn't until an illustrator works their magic, that everything falls into place.
Faith has lived in my heart for a long while now. Not just as a character in a story, but as a feeling. A gentle reminder of that little part of us which still believes there might be something more, just beyond what we can see.
She’s curious in the way children are when they’re really listening, to the world around them, and to the quiet thoughts inside. The children that ask questions, imagine possibilities, and wonder… what if?
The idea for this story began outside, in our own garden, with a tiny fairy door.
My children used to leave notes for a fairy we named Pip. They were little folded pieces of paper filled with questions, thoughts, and sometimes just a simple hello. Somehow, overnight, those letters would be answered. Not perfectly, and absolutely not neatly. Often a little crumpled, sometimes smudged, occasionally with the tell-tale signs of a slug or a nibble from a snail. And yet, those were the moments they loved the most.

There was something magical in that exchange. Not just in the idea of a fairy writing back, but in the space it created. A space where their thoughts mattered. Where their questions were heard. Where imagination wasn’t something to grow out of, but something to step into.
Faith was born from that same space.
She’s the child who notices the door. The one who pauses. The one who chooses to believe there might be something waiting on the other side.
This is just the beginning of her story, and maybe, as you meet her (and her special sibling), it might gently remind you of something of a time when you believed a little more easily, imagined a little more freely, and trusted that quiet voice within you.
I don't believe that part never really leaves us, just sometimes, it’s just waiting for a door to open.
If you’d like to be part of Faith’s journey as she grows, with more of her world still to be revealed before her autumn release, I share little glimpses and gentle updates through my newsletter:
