Learning to Rest in Different Ways

Hello,
I’ve been thinking lately about rest. Not the kind we’re told we should take, but the kind we actually need.
In a world where we are on the go constantly, we are asked from every direction what we think; and not just by humans any more, but by computers too. Some days, I just want to lock myself in a room, switch off the lights and reset.
Mostly, restoring myself looks like being alone with a book and a cup of coffee. Quiet. Still. No demands. Whilst, at other times, that same quiet feels heavy, and what I really need is music turned up loud, singing along, letting my body move again. (Often when I'm ironing, or making a meal for the family. Queen's Don't Stop Me Now, is always a winner!)
I’ve learned that rest isn’t one-size-fits-all. It changes depending on why I'm tired in the first place.
For a long time, I thought there was a 'right' way to recharge — something calm and orderly. Like we are shown 'what is best' on all the social platforms. But listening more closely to myself has taught me that restoration is about honesty, not rules. It’s about asking. Asking ME, 'What would support me today?' Listening to how I feel, and trusting the answer that comes back.
If you’re feeling worn down, you’re not doing anything wrong. You might simply be trying to rest in a way that doesn’t match the season you’re in.
Be gentle with yourself. You’re allowed to meet your needs as they are — not as you think they should be.
With much love,
Fiona. x
P.S. If this letter found you at the right time, I’m glad you’re here. Thank you.
P.P.S This is the first letter of many (I hope) to connect with myself, as a small journal. In the process perhaps it may help you connect with yourself too.
