When Faith Stepped Into Colour

In the creation of any book, as an author, there are moments when a character shifts. Sometimes it is during the writing stage, when they suddenly take an unexpected turn as your imagination runs free, other times it is when the illustrator brings them to life in colour.
When they move from words imagined on the page into something you can almost reach out and meet, it is a wonderful feeling.
This is that moment for Faith, as she appears in glorious colour from my talented illustrator Oshadi Sandareka. (Oshadi Sandareka – Children’s Book Illustrator | Portfolio)
Seeing Faith in colour feels like watching her step forward properly for the first time. She is still the same curious, determined little girl, but now with warmth, depth, and a quiet confidence that feels a little more alive. She doesn’t just believe in the magic, she feels it.
Faith is the kind of child who notices things others walk past. (Perhaps you know someone like that too?) They notice a door no one else saw, a switch no one else turned off, a feeling no one else stopped to listen to; all with a possibility of what lies beyond, that doesn’t need proving before she allows herself to explore it.
For me, there’s something incredibly powerful in that, because I know there is magic everywhere, and belief, at its heart, is quiet and steady. Belief is certain in a way that doesn’t need permission, and Faith carries that so naturally.
If you’d like to be part of Faith’s journey as she grows, with more of her world still to be revealed before her autumn release, I share little glimpses and gentle updates through my newsletter:
